Creative Writing Competition

Each year, the Maricopa Community Colleges sponsors a district-wide competition to encourage and recognize student writers as well as to promote literary excellence. Each years' publication showcases originality in Poetry, Fiction, Essay, and One-Act Play/Scripts.

Entry deadline November 21, 2014

Entries may be submitted in the categories of poetry, fiction, essay, or one-act play/script.

Entries not meeting guidelines and entry requirements will not be accepted

Entries from each of the four categories will be blind reviewed by a panel of experts in the corresponding discipline. Winners in each of the categories will be showcased in Passages, a Maricopa Community Colleges annual publication dedicated to the competition. Winners are honored at an annual creative writing awards dinner.


Submit entry

Please follow these steps to submit your entries (you may wish to print these instructions):

  • All students will be required to create a CaFE account to submit their entries.
  • Go to "Register Here" button and follow instructions.
  • Now go back to CaFE home page and Click on "View All Calls" button
  • Type "Maricopa" in the Keyword field and click on the "Go" button
  • Click on "View More Info" link to view application criterion
  • To submit a student entry, Click on "Apply to This Call" link. 
  • Log in and follow prompts
  • Record or print out confirmation code

General eligibility

A contestant must be a currently enrolled "for credit" student at one of the Maricopa Community Colleges (All faculty excluded). Entries must be works written during the students' enrollment in credit courses at a MCCCD college. Students who have previously won First Place in a category are not eligible to submit again in that category. ALL entries MUST be submitted online, via the CaFE online application system,, by no later than 10:59 p.m., November 21, 2014. Only one entry per category may be submitted by an individual. Entries cannot be works from a previous publication, or previously submitted for any MCCCD district level, Creative Writing Competitions, .


Maximum length

  • Poetry - 67 lines
  • Fiction - 3,000 words
  • Essay - 2,000 words
  • One-Act Play/Script - 3,000 words including stage direction and production notes.

The upper right corner of each page of the entry must include Title of Entry, Category and Page Number.

Your name appearing anywhere on your creative writing document will result in an automatic disqualification.

Entries must be submitted online via the CaFE website. College Coordinators will verify submissions. Please note the document MUST be word-processed using Microsoft Word, 12 point type, and in 8 1/2 x 11” formatting.

Winning entries will be notified in February 2015 by the Maricopa Community Colleges' Center for Learning & Instruction.

All winning entries will be required to submit additional documents, which will be provided by the Maricopa Community Colleges' Center for Learning & Instruction. All completed documentation will be required prior to receipt of award funding.

*First Place winners, with the exception of Scripts, will be entered in the League for Innovation in the Community College’s Student Literary Competition and be required to complete League application materials. The One-Act Play category in the League Competition does not include scripts. The highest evaluated One-Act Play in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place will be submitted to the League for Innovation for judging.



The judges will be professionals in the field of creative writing. The decisions of the judges are final.


Maricopa County Community College District assumes no responsibility for lost, misdirected, stolen entries, or printing errors in the final publication. All physical entries become the property of MCCCD without infringement on the copyrights of the entrants. MCCCD reserves the right to edit for spelling and grammatical errors. Entries will be screened for proper submission procedures and will be rejected if they do not meet the general eligibility or the specific entry requirements.
