Honors Forum: Peter Phillips - Media Democracy in Action
Dr. Peter Phillips is the director of Project Censored, an organization dedicated to telling stories avoided by the mainstream media. Do you ever wonder why the media covers certain stories and not others? Peter Phillips does. As Director of Project Censored, he is dedicated to finding and telling stories about significant issues that the public should be aware of, but for one reason or another, are not. Project Censored works in cooperation with numerous independent media groups to find important censored stories, like the deaths of over one million Iraqis caused by U.S. occupation and the corporate benefits of No Child Left Behind.
Besides Project Censored, Phillips is a professor and chair of sociology at Sonoma State University, where he teaches classes in media censorship, sociology of power, political sociology, and sociology of media. He has published nine editions of Censored: Media Democracy in Action from Seven Stories Press.
