Developmental Mathematics Learning Trajectories: Continuing the Conversation (1 of 5 part series)

Primary tabs

Friday, September 7, 2012 - 9:00am

Trends both nationally and locally point to a growing population of students who come to the community college lacking some of the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in college-level work.   The federal government and several philanthropic organizations have recently focused efforts and funding on underprepared students and the ramifications for student success and economic well-being.

Developmental Math Reform Project

The developmental math reform project is a comprehensive restructuring of the mathematics curriculum by creating learning trajectories for a module-based developmental level curriculum. In May 2012, math faculty throughout the district engaged in conversations focused on the development of developmental math learning trajectories that facilitate student learning, achievement, and success. In August 2012, faculty will have the opportunity to continue the conversation and actively engage in developing developmental math learning trajectories, competencies, outlines, and descriptions. The project is from August 2012 through February 2013 and includes five working dialogue days, module team meetings, and deliverables. The goal is to develop curriculum for developmental math modules that facilitate student learning, achievement, and success.

Working Dialogue Day (1 of 5 part series)

The purpose of this 5-part series of Working Dialogue Days is to provide opportunities for faculty to discuss and develop curriculum for developmental math modules that facilitate student learning, achievement, and success. Faculty will have the opportunity to a) review and refine math learning trajectories, b) learn about the Math 102 and diagnostics project, and c) develop a plan for submitting the math learning trajectories to the Math Instructional Council.

Compensation

Residential Math faculty who participate in the developmental math reform project may receive the equivalent of a one load hour assignment (~32 hours).  Assignments must comply with residential faculty policies for 2012-2013: http://www.maricopa.edu/employees/divisions/hr/files/managing/policy/rfppol.pdf

Please note faculty who receive the equivalent of a one load hour assignment (~32 hours) must actively participate in the development of the developmental math reform project.

Deliverables

Attendees are asked to assist with a) developing a plan for finalizing the developmental math learning trajectories, b) setting meeting dates, milestones, communication plans, and reposnibilities, and c) developing and submitting the learning trajectories to the Math Instructional Council by Wednesday, October 3, 2012.
