Beth Van Winkle began her science career as a student at FLCC after serving in the United States Marine Corps.  She transferred to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and completed her BS in Biotechnology, minoring in Philosophy and joined the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.  She completed her MS (2005) and PhD (2009) in Biochemistry there focusing on mitochondria and Alzheimer's disease.  Her involvement in a long term multidisciplinary project in nanotechnology led to a Cornell University postdoctoral fellowship at the New York State Agriculture Experiment Station (NYSAES).

During graduate school she became interested in science education and scrutinizing student learning.  Greatly influenced by the late Jack Kampmeier, a national leader in developing the Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) Workshop model for teaching chemistry, she became active on the University Committee for Interdisciplinary Studies (UCIS) and Jack’s Leadership in Education group.  With a constructivist approach she remains dedicated to exceptional research practices and feels that using case studies paired with active research as pedagogy creates an ideal environment for new scientists to become fully engaged in their learning.
