UN SDG Open Pedagogy Fellowship

Summer and Fall 2020

Spots are Limited! -- Applications are due April 29 -- See Application Process below

“Open Pedagogy”

Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials that are either in the public domain or made available for reuse, retention, redistribution, remixing, and revision under open content licenses (such as Creative Commons). Faculty across Maricopa and beyond are transitioning to the use of these open materials in order to ensure that their students have free, immediate, and permanent access to knowledge. Increasingly, learners everywhere are beginning to exercise the permissions afforded by the open licensing to engage directly in the curation and creation of global knowledge in the 21st century. Practitioners of “Open Pedagogy” design learning experiences that involve students in what are called “Renewable Assignments,” creative and constructive activities that generate actual value in the world beyond the classroom and foster global collaboration through future revision and remixing, supporting the Maricopa County Community College District’s commitment to global engagement and workforce development.

In partnership with Montgomery College (Maryland) and Kwantlen Polytechnic Institute (British Columbia), the Maricopa Millions OER Project is offering faculty the opportunity to participate in a collaborative, cross-institutional, and cross-disciplinary fellowship program designed around the seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

This fellowship is designed to assist faculty with creating renewable assignments (all of which will carry a Creative Commons license) to help students become agents of change in their own communities. Fellows will be teamed up with faculty from the other institutions to design three renewable assignments during the Summer 2020 semester, two of which will then be piloted in live classes in the subsequent academic year. A student showcase will take place during the Spring 2021 semester (tentatively planned for Tuesday, February 23, 2021).

Training and support from the Maricopa Millions team will be provided. Open Pedagogy Fellows will be required to attend a kick-off meeting and three additional meetings throughout the summer:

  • Tuesday, May 26, 2020, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (Kick-off Meeting)
  • Wednesday, June 10, 2020, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, June 24, 2020, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, August 12, 2020, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Participating Maricopa faculty will receive a one load-hour stipend upon completion of the fellowship. Permanent residential, OYO/OSO, and adjunct faculty may apply.  (For OYO/OSO and adjunct faculty, participation in the fellowship does not guarantee future employment in MCCCD.)
