Honoring Students’ Journeys: Fostering Equitable Engaged Learning with Attention to Students’ Experiences and Goals Dr. Jessie Moore Understanding and building on students’ prior knowledge and experiences underpin teaching and learning, functioning as a cornerstone pedagogical practice for helping students integrate and transfer knowledge to new contexts. “The prior” includes students’ experiences in and beyond the classroom, their narratives of their individual journeys, and the challenges and opportunities they’ve encountered before reaching our classrooms. When pedagogical strategies attend to students’ “prior,” students can practice transforming their knowledge for their current learning situation and for future personal and professional goals. Drawing on student and instructor stories, this keynote explores pedagogical strategies for embracing students’ prior experiences, building on them within our courses, and preparing students to transfer their integrated knowledge forward as they continue their journeys. |
